Plant & Seed Installation
Installing the right plants and seed in the best locations for target habitat establishment is crucial. RECON’s understanding of native habitats allows us to start each project on the fast-track to project success.
Project Example: Anderprises Vernal Pool Mitigation Site
Focus: Sensitive species and resources mitigation
Location: San Diego, CA
Habitat Type: Vernal pool, maritime succulent scrub, and native grassland habitat
Implementation: Irrigation system, container plants, and drill seeding
Maintenance: One-year plant establishment period
RECON's restoration crew and several subcontractors worked together to install 29 vernal pools over nine acres in the Otay Mesa community of the city of San Diego, California. The project included vernal pool grading, artificial burrowing owl burrow installation, irrigation system installation, drill seeding, native planting, and one year of maintenance. Owl burrow installation followed the specifications created through collaboration between the California Department of Transportation and the San Diego Zoo. Vernal pool creation included grading 29 vernal pool basins. Three basins were later observed supporting the federally and state-listed spreading navarretia (Navarretia fossalis) during the first wet season following grading, without any seeding of the species.
